That's a really helpful treatise for anyone considering bit-banging I2C. Certainly refreshed my memory (and would have saved me days of sweat, 15 years ago...). You're right, it WAS noise (we were blasting the case with 8kv 'human body' static discharges at the time) that triggered the hang.
