The first question, of course, is always: have you got your baus rate correct?
Since you don't state your crystal frequency, it is impossible to check this for you. Check it yourself at: http://www.keil.com/c51/baudrate.asp Are you sure you have all your other PC settings correct - number of data & stop bits, parity? Are you sure that the physical connection to you micro is correct; ie, cables, connectors, RS232 transceiver, PCB, etc...
