You could consider also using an USB-enabled '51, COM ports on PCs are vanishing gradually.
But if you are planning to add some "brain" just to make a more easily controllable RS232-to-RS485 convertor, couldn't that also manage a part of the protocol? For example, if the protocol incorporates periodic polling of slaves with specific action only if a slave requests it, couldn't that poll be implemented entirely in the '51, reporting to the PC only that specific request.
